Ödesprocession (Desolation Row - Bob Dylan)
I en blogg för ett par år sen raljerade jag lite över svårigheten att från Kap Verde-kreol återge stämningen på svenska.
Men även engelska, och inte minst när den kommer i Bob Dylans tappning, kan ibland vara knepig. Svårfångad redan i originaltexten, är Desolation Row en utmaning. Den spelades in på en Columbia-skiva år 1965 och anses av en del entusiaster som kronan på verket.
Min tolkning är förstås långt ifrån den enda. Både Mikael Wiehe (“De ensligas allé”) och Dan Tillberg (”Hopplöshetens gränd”) har gjort fina svenska versioner. Själv har jag – i enlighet med grundidén för serien “Så låter det på svenska”– försökt att genomgående följa originaltexten. I ett fall har jag dock avvikit från normen. Jag har valt att inte tolka “Desolation Row” som en plats utan som en hopplöshetens rad (row) av ödesdigra, absurda bilder, en poesi och samhällskritik i form av en Ödesprocession.
Den börjar med en känga åt rättsväsendet. En hängning blir ett kommersiellt spektakel, och polischefen är blind, halvdrogad och, måhända, lätt oanständig. Upploppspatrullen väntar otåligt på att få sysselsättning, medan Askungen beskådar det hela med ett vant öga och Romeo ställer till bråk.
I den fortsatta processionen kommer bland annat kritik av religionen gestaltad av en “livlös” Ofelia; av vetenskapen genom en Einstein i fullkomligt förfall; av läkarprofessionen som framställs som snuskig (Dr Filth, en anspelning på Freud?) och okunnig, osv, osv.
Efter en nattlig hopsamling och avlivning av oliktänkande kommer i alla fall en “positiv” tanke: Titanic må ha gått under men på havets botten har man sällskap av sköna sjöjungfrur och behöver inte fundera så mycket…
Diktaren själv, slutligen, mår inte riktigt bra och vill inte ha brev.
Men så, efter att i stort sett ha gjort sig osams med alla, fick han Nobelpriset i litteratur!
Nåja, det var 50 år senare, och mycket kan ju hinna förlåtas på 50 år. Det otroliga är väl då närmast att Lunds Källarduo nu har en Nobelpristagare i serien “Så låter det på svenska”.
