I Nairobis nattliv på 70-talet lyste en stjärna starkare än andra. På lördagsnätterna var stämningen på Starlight Club uppe vid Valley Road så förtätad att den kunde skäras med kniv. Men i dunklet och dunket på dansgolvet, vem hade väl en tanke på att första versen i Boney Ms jättehit var hämtad från en psalm i bibelns Psaltare (“Vid Babels floder där satt vi och grät när vi tänkte på Sion”) om judarnas “babyloniska fångenskap” sedan Nebukadnessar II lagt Jerusalem öde för sisådär 2600 år sen.
Eller att detta sedan länkats samman med sentida slaveri, så att vi egentligen dansade till en slavarnas frihetssång lånad från rastans Jamaica, där The Melodians (Dowe/McNaughton, Beverley’s Records 1970) i originalversionen hyllade sin egen Messias, King Alpha, kejsar Hailie Selassie av Etiopien.
